Five aspects of the Elizabethan period are discussed in this book, published by the BBC: the Elizabethan people in 1558; the dream of order, 1558-70; neither peace nor war,1570-85; the darker years, 1585-1603 and some historical problems of the Elizabethan nation.

The book aims to provide a detailed view of an important period of English history in the light of what was then (1964) recent historical research.
